w/ One Acre Fund

A nonprofit social enterprise working to improve the lives

of smallholder farmers, primarily in East Africa

From 2016-2018 I worked at One Acre Fund in East Africa. One Acre Fund is a social enterprise whose mission is to eliminate hunger by offering asset-based loans to smallholder farmers. As a software developer and manager, I contributed to projects that handled farmer enrollment and repayments, and I helped maintain and extend internal software solutions that handled financial, logistic, and client data.

w/ Engagement Lab

NewsPix

Conceived by Catherine D'Ignazio and Matt Carroll, NewsPix is a Chrome extension that displays a breaking news story every time the user opens a new tab. The goal of the project is to help drive engagement to small and local new organizations at a time when most people get their news from social media feeds.

Our first partner is the Keene Sentinel.

Risk Horizon

A game that teaches the key concepts of the World Bank's "World Development Report 2014, Risk and Opportunity: Managing Risk for Development." It was designed for the final section of an online course, and was played by over 7,000 people in 178 countries.

As part of the project I parsed the gameplay data so that the game's strength as a learning tool could be studied. Lab director Eric Gordon wrote about the results of that data here.
